YISD Superintendent Dr. Xavier De La Torre announced that district  schools would remain closed for the remainder of the year April 15, following Governor Greg Abbott’s order to close all Texas schools. 

Abbott had previously ordered schools closed until May 4, but did not rule out extending his order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. 

“Friday the governor said the team of doctors advising his office had advised him against reopening schools and determined “It would be unsafe for students to gather in schools for the foreseeable future,” reported Molly Smith, news, elpasotimes.com, April 17.

De la Torre announced the closing of the schools on the district website.

“Students will not return physically to their classroom,” De La Torre said in an update, April 15. 

On the same day De La Torre said May 15, is the last day of instruction for students making progress on work. Student with incomplete work or in a credit recovery program will continue school until May 22. De La Torre and the YISD Board said  virtual summer school for students starts June 8.
