The golf team is facing another season. They started practice in September and started the season in October. Golf coach Oscar Cordova is positive his team will win the district championship again.

Golf lasts the whole year through May. Practice helps each individual improve for tournaments and as a team.

“We work on mechanic which means we work on our swings, then we go out to the golf course. We put our training to the test and play a different variety of golf tournaments,” golf team member Zach Hernandez said.

Every sport demands practice but the golf team does not practice on home territory.

“We practice at Ascarate Golf Course and our upstairs facility in the field house,” captain Ethan Jaso said.

Golf is different from other sports. It can be a hobby or a game that can be played with others or alone.

“I have enjoyed playing golf ever since middle school. I find it a very relaxing sport and it can help get your mind off things and overall I enjoy playing the sport,” Hernandez said.

Golf is a team but while playing in tournaments it’s all about individual competition.

“During tournaments it’s boys vs. boys and girls vs. girls,” coach Cordova said.

It all depends on each of the players and how well they do.

“The sport of golf is a team but this sport is based on individual scores of each player,” Hernandez said.

The golf team is ready to play tournaments. Boys have 10 tournaments and girls have nine tournaments at Ascarate, Painted Dunes, Lone Stars, Underwood, and Sunrise Course (Ft. Bliss). They have a coach who trains them well and players have high expectation of winning district.

“It looks like we will get to be district champs,” coach Cordova said.

Last year the boys varsity team took district.

“I feel that the guys varsity team will win district again,” Jaso said.
