Heartfelt journey of a brother

Nicole Cuellar, Sections-editor

After his brother is taken away by the state, Richard Pelzer’s mother turns all her negative energy towards him as he finds himself becoming her new target.  Richard Pelzer tells his tale in a A Brother’s Journey, published in 2005 about an abusive childhood. After being mothers little “Nazi” against his brother Richard finds the tables are turned as he fends off nightly beatings and Tabasco sauce torture.

A Brother’s Journey, is the sequel to his brother David Pelzer’s book The Child Called It. Richard tells his own version of growing up a Pelzer.

After reading and re-reading this book it brings on a new wave of sadness and fear as one struggles not to cry for the broken kid depicted in the book. One is mesmerized by Richard as he tries to survive the hell called home. He is beaten to the point of hospitalization and just like his brother David, Richard finds himself beating all odds against the devil known as “mother.”

Upon finishing the book one tends reflect on life and past struggles so as to understand them.
