Swing, batter, batter, swing.

The smell of fresh grass is in the air and baseball season is underway. The baseball team is looking for a district title to make the season a home run.

“For our team we have a simple motto, get better, work hard and have an outstanding season,” assistant coach Carlos Valverde said.

The team counts on senior leadership.

“This season we have a lot of seniors, while they offer advice and experience to the lower levels, we also have a lot of good up and coming players,” Valverde said.

The baseball program has been somewhat overshadowed by football through the years, however things look to change as the team hosted the Southwest University First Annual baseball tournament.

“It was good for us to be one of the host schools of the tournament because it got our name out there and everyone in the district knew who we were,” pitcher Steven Jaso said.

While making playoffs gives most teams the benefit of the doubt, the team wants to exceed expectations in the long run.

“We want to be district champs of course, but the main goal is to aim for that state title, and we know it’s a possibility this season,” Jaso said.

Each game the team wants to improve across the board. They want to keep their composure at a steady pace while they rack up wins against their district opponents, looking to improve on their 8-4 district record.

“We want to play as far into May as we can, and travel while also looking for something more past a bi-district,” right outfielder Carlos Gonzalez said.

Improvement and hard work are vital factors for the team. They want to show that the team is no push-over and it can be an elite team.

“I don’t see why not. We have the potential and the talent to do it, and we’ve got the city’s attention, so I’m sure we can,” Gonzalez said.
