Forensics the study of science and criminal justice was introduced to the Law and Enforcement pathway allowing students a new study in the medical field. The class offers more opportunities.

“It is part of the TEA and Law of Public Safety, which means that it’s related to the other public safety careers,” Career and Technology department chairman Paul Solis said.

Students in this class have an eye to the future

“I am in this class to see if I will enjoy this as a future career and get a job,” senior Azul Gomez said.

Forensics teacher Sherri Bryant likes the class.

“I am very excited to teach this class,” Bryant said. “I think it’s an interesting opportunity for the students.”

Bryant comes with plenty of qualifications.

“My background is chemistry and science,” Bryant said. “Forensics requires these subjects in order to teach and study.”

Forensics is not an easy career to pursue.

“You have to be able to analyze a crime scene, collect evidence, analyze different types of evidence to include blood splatter, fingerprinting, hair, fiber analysis, blood patterns, glass, DNA and how to package evidence, ” Bryant said.

New classes must be approved by administration.

“The idea to start this class came from administration, Mr. Gamez and public safety teachers. They felt that forensics is an important part of law and safety,” Solis said.

In forensics, like in many classes, special equipment is needed

“We use rulers and protractors. We are not able to use real bodies but we have our own forensic mannequin called Buster,” Bryant said.

The class demands a good array of skills.

“We are required to have good observation, geometry and chemistry, ” senior Isaac Serrano said.

This class requires preparation in order to succeed.

“You need to have at least one year of biology, chemistry and physics. We use math since forensics uses geometry,” Bryant said. “I also recommend to get very interested in forensics.”

Forensics is an important part of law.

“Forensics solves crimes without testimonies, ” Bryant said. “It’s Important to put murderers away.”
