The football team kicked off the season with field kicker Lové Tovar, one of three women to join this male dominated sport and the only woman currently playing on the team

“I have high expectations, I feel so happy to be able to play, this is my first year, I’ve never felt so happy and privileged,” Tovar said.

Lové Tovar wasn’t planning on signing up. She and football coach Jesse Perales joked about her joining football and becoming the kicker. Tovar is on the soccer team, but joined the football team after the coach’s encouragement.

“It feels great, but I feel nervous because usually, you don’t see a girl playing football. I want to show everyone that a girl can play football too,” Tovar said.

Tovar and her teammates have been practicing hard to take the team further and gain more experience.

“We have a team that has potential for the play-offs and a team that works together,” quarterback Deven Zubia said.

Zubia and Perales both expect the football team to play with strategy on the field.

“We are pleased and so far, everything has gone well,” Perales said, “I expect us to be district champs and be in the play-offs.”

The season started with a win against Mayfield High School, Aug. 31.

“Knowing that we beat Mayfield gave us a lot of confidence,” Zubia said.

Mayfield High School is a tough opponent.

”Mayfield is a strong program in New Mexico, and us shutting them out really boosted our confidence,” Perales said.

As of Oct. 3, the Conquistadores stands 3-0 in district, and 4-1 overall.

“My expectations are that we win more than we lose and hope we win districts,” Tovar said.
