2016 Sport Wrap-ups

Cross Country

The varsity girls team finished second in district qualifying for regionals. The varsity boys finished sixth in district, with runner Eddie Corona qualifying for regionals.

“On the girls side, it went very well. We had some help from the girls soccer team, to be able to do what we did. On the boys side, we had to adjust and had a young team. As for next year, the future looks bright,” cross country coach Orlando Hairston said.

Wrestling

The staggering wrestling season saw seven students qualify for the All-City team.

“Although we are losing most of the varsity team, it is a good looking group for next year. The girls team is looking astounding,” wrestling coach Carlos Armendariz said.

Track

The track season went well, the team competed in district April 15-16. Even though the team is losing five girls and 15 boys, a major loss, the team is looking good, rested and prepared.

“Although we are having major setbacks due to how many seniors are leaving, we are looking into getting the next team excited, recruiting more females and getting better every day,” track coach Orlando Hairston said.

Baseball

The baseball team fought for playoffs, which began in May, and ended at 12-12-1.

“The season went good, we’ve had our ups and downs, many injuries that hurt us, but the players are overcame the walls that came up,” head baseball coach Neil Sanchez said.

Boys Basketball

The boys ended with the season well standing 27-5 overall, the best record in school history.

“The season went great, the kids worked hard and gave their all in every game,” head basketball coach William Churchill said.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team finished 14-17 overall. The coach described it as a challenging season.

“The season went well, despite the obstacles we ran into, we managed to finish strong,” basketball coach Corina Marruffo said.

Boys Soccer

It was a good season for the boys. They ended the season 11-8-3.

“We gave our all out there, I am very proud of the boys performance and we will continue to give our all next year,” head soccer coach Bruce Reichman said.

Girls Soccer

The soccer girls aimed for more than just the goal on the field, and broke through all ending the season 10-12.

“The girls worked hard out there and although we are losing four talented seniors we will push through and get stronger for the upcoming season,” girls soccer coach Christopher Lopez said.

Football

The football team conquered an exciting season with an overall score of 13-5.

“For it being our last year for some of us, we gave our all on that field. We worked hard for our accomplishments and I hope next year will be just as successful.” quarterback Anthony Lopez said.

Volleyball

The volleyball team had a slammin’ season with an overall record of 6-15, although the players faced challenges they gave the season their all.

“Although we had many obstacles throughout the season, the girls and I never gave up in giving our all, the teams for next year are looking very well,” varsity player Tianna Salgado said.

Golf

The golf team tool second in the district golf tournament and qualified for Regionals for the first time as a team including Roman Guerrero, Zavior Alvarez, Evan Villalva, Ethan Jaso and Austin Pina. Freshman Roman Guerrero placed second in the district golf tournament, and junior Monica Guerrero placed second, a second year in a row.

“I look forward to placing first in the district 2-5A golf tournament next year with my boys team. Roman Guerrero and Monica Guerrero should be our overall district champions and qualify for regionals. Our golf team is really good!,” golf coach Oscar Cordova said.

Tennis

The tennis team had a good season. They had players make it to quarter and semi-finals.

“It was an unusual year with all the changes yet a successful one,” tennis player Joseph Contreras said.

Swimming

The swimming team had a great season, with the only female qualifier for State Championship, freshman Madison Valverde.

“Del Valle is looking forward for some take back points in next year’s district meet,” varsity swimming coach Jesse Sandoval said.
