Youth’s lack of interest in politics could have repercussions
February 4, 2016
Young people have many things on their minds. Most have school, family, expectations, even work to worry about. Politics, is probably not among their priorities even as it affects them greatly and could mean a big improvement.
In looking for the definition of politics one finds different interpretations; it could mean the activities regarding the governing of a country or area or the study of government and the state. These definitions make politics seem more like a college class than an important part of a person’s life. However, through politics people can make changes, make a difference and have their voice heard.
The way politicians are portrayed is a big contributor to the lack of interest in young people. Politicians are portrayed as greedy and corrupt and even if that may be true that is an even bigger reason to become active in what goes on in the country. Government teacher Carlos Valverde stresses the importance of being politically informed, he says that with the many distractions youth face it is no surprise that they are not interested. He accentuates the danger of this way of thinking since one day young people will become voting adults greatly affected by decisions politicians make and if one is not informed enough to make a smart vote or even be aware of one’s voting rights, the decisions will be made by others.
Young people have great power and in the words of Uncle Ben “with great power comes great responsibility.” If the young people of America united and became interested in their own rights they could make a change and have a better country not only now but in the long run.
Young people can participate by tapping into the latest news and exercise their right to vote. The best way to make a real change is to work for what one believes is right. The need is there, youths just have to join in.
