Choir students compete in Area
February 10, 2016
Students traveled to Midland, TX, Jan. 8-9 to compete in the Choir Area Competition.
“Each student prepared five songs that they have worked on since July,” choir teacher Lisa Serna said.
Only two students competed, Diana Gutierrez and Mario Garces.
“Both students were prepared and ready to wow the crowd,” Serna said.
The next competition is a solo ensemble.
Gutierrez prepared a song for the area competition that she has been practicing since July.
“It’s very competitive, a lot of teamwork, and a lot of fun,” Gutierrez said.
When on stage she knows that she needs to provide a great performance.
“I have nerves, but am mostly calm, happy and very confident,” Gutierrez said.
She goes over her music every day and performs for her friends.
“What’s next for me is that there’s going to be a solo Ensemble next year and hopefully I make it at the All State Choir,” Gutierrez said.
Garces also competed in January.
“I thought the performance was really inspiring,” Garces said.
Garces is calm and knows that he has to do his best.
“Everyone was so good. I felt like one of them,” Garces said.
Being in choir takes a lot of practice and a lot of deep breathing.
“The hardest part about the piece was the rhyme and high notes. What’s next is to make it all the way to the All State Choir,” Garces said.
