The track team has set their eyes on the season, challenging themselves to succeed.

The first meet was Feb. 10, and with new obstacles to overcome throughout the season, the team and coaches have set goals.

“We want to be competitive and be up there in district champ or in runner up across all levels,” head coach Corina Marrufo said. “We also want to take more people to area and regionals so they can get more exposure.”

The team has 60 boys and 50 girls. There are 36 returners.

“We want to recruit younger athletes since we had a lot of kids graduate last year,” Marrufo said.

Challenges come with the new season.

“A lot of our strong leaders graduated, so we’re looking at some our athletes to see where they stand,” Maruffo said

The track team is determined to improve.

“This season is different because you always get a new group of kids who are motivated and excited about the season, they are very self driven,” Marrufo said.

Aside from team goals, athletes are determined to meet personal goals.

“My goals are to try to win first place in all my races and make it past regionals.” runner Josh Keough said. “There’s a lot of good competition in El Paso and out of town.”

Track requires a lot from its athletes.

“I hope to run 52 seconds, it’s easy to get unmotivated but you have to be mentally tough to go on in the season,” track captain Jamie Flores said. “It’s easy to feel like you can’t do it anymore but you have to get yourself to finish it.”

The track team starts at practice during 10th period and ends at 5:30. The team works to improve each day.

“During practice we socialize and make it a good atmosphere,“ Flores said.

The team works with together to keep up a good dynamic.

“We make each other work, we compete a lot like racing each other,” Keough said
