Tennis team on the court
December 22, 2022
Tennis is a competitive sport that requires focus from its athletes who play both semesters and commit to success.
On the surface tennis seems simple. There is a racket and a ball, the athlete must make sure the ball doesn’t hit their court, and tennis requires excellent skills.
“It requires speed, flexibility and agility,” tennis coach Victor Gutierrez said. “You have to be a good athlete and play hard.”
The team has two captains, one for the boys team and one for the girls team. There are 10 returning players and six new players.
“The environment is good,” boys captain Brandon Nava said. “We lost some players but we’ve grown as a team to be better.”
Like all sports, tennis requires skill and time management.
“We’re out here practicing as much as we can for district (games),” girls team captain Andrea Ramirez said. “We’ve made it three years in a row.“
The team begins their season in August and plays year-round.
“They play hard and work hard all year,” Gutierrez said. “Our biggest competitor is Bel Air.”
The tennis team also fundraises to cover equipment and travel costs.
“Last year we fundraised to pay off the trip to San Antonio for a tournament,” Ramirez said. “We usually fundraise by selling chocolates.”
