As the spring season of shows came to a close in 2019 one show appeared and shocked the internet. “Demon Slayer” adapted from the popular manga series “Kimetsu no Yaiba” written and drawn by Gotouge, Koyoharu.

The show tells the story of Tanjirou Kamado who after being forced to stay another night in a neighboring village discovers that his whole family has been slain by demons in the middle of the night. His sister Nezuko Kamado is the sole survivor of the attack but she is turned into a bloodthirsty demon, after seeing this Tanjiro swears to avenge his family and joins the Demon Slayer Corps in the hopes that he can find a way to cure his sister. He is willing to do whatever it takes.

“Demon Slayer” is a supernatural action show with hints of comedy that takes place in Taisho-era Japan. The show has the classic and almost worn-out revenge and rescue plot that many shows follow but it does use it to its advantage. The story is very hit or miss with people. The characters are plain in some aspects. The main character, Tanjiro, is the glue of his group with great physical and mental strength. The other main character Nezuko is silent as she can’t speak and Zenitsu is a character whose strength is great but his cowardliness limits him and can make him seem annoying to the audience but when unconscious his powers make him extremely powerful.

The anime is overall great with its pitfalls but the thing that carries the show is the animation. CGI is often looked down upon in most anime because of its poor quality (Such as “Berserk 2016”). But in “Demon Slayer” it is executed beautifully as in most of the fight scenes it isn’t even noticeable and it adds to the beautiful experience especially in episode 19 which broke the internet as it was airing.

“Demon Slayer” became a smash hit in the anime community winning anime of the decade in the Crunchyroll anime awards and got a movie that was released in the United States in April of 2021. The film was the highest-grossing movie ever made in Japan and serves as a bridge for season one to the upcoming season two.
