“The Grammys” have the glamoury dresses and the famous red carpet, but the committee doesn’t always hit the bullseye when it comes to the nominations. This year nominations are a huge miss for many fans. 

Starting with Tyler The Creator, an American rapper who released his latest album IGOR, May 17, which charted No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. While he is nominated for Rap Album of the Year, fans believe he should have been nominated for the Album of the Year award, “But this isn’t just a rap album. It’s closer to Billy Joel than it is to Tribe,” @Jamiliarity on Twitter posted. 

A category fans aren’t happy with, is the rap category. Not a single female rapper is nominated even though they dominated 2019. Lizzo, a female American rapper has the longest-running No. 1 spot on Billboard Hot 100 with her song “Truth Hurts,” and although she was nominated in other categories, many fans feel that she deserved this nomination too. Other female rappers that fans feel were cheated include Megan Thee Stallion and Rico Nasty. Megan’s album Fever, featuring the iconic song “Hot Girl Summer” featuring Nicki Minaj, and Rico Nasty’s album Anger Management are missing, disappointing but not surprising. 

Love them or hate them, nobody expected to see BTS on a list like this. The South Korean-pop group have taken the U.S. and rest of the world by storm, selling out an all stadium tour, and becoming the first group to have three No. 1 albums in a year since The Beatles without a single English song. With their latest album release Map of the Soul: Persona, the group topped the iTunes charts at No. 1 in 47 countries, selling over four million copies as of Nov. 19, yet artists below them such as Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, H.E.R., Lil Nas X and Lizzo are Grammy nominees for Album of the Year. The seven member group could have easily been nominated for the Best Pop, Best Group/Duo and the Best Vocal awards but sadly were not. Definitely a cultural blindspot on The Recording Academy’s part. 

The Grammys committee claims they have diversity but in looking at these nominations, many would agree that The Grammys should practice what they preach.
