Varsity quarterback picks up nomination
Two-year starting quarterback Steven Montez has contributes to his team by being a leader although he is a year younger than the rest of the team. In the third week of the season Montez was nominated, but did not win the Gridiron Legends Player of the Week by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, with both Wrangler Retro and Cavenders, gives a weekly Player of the Week award to the most deserving high school football player in the state.
Growing up Montez was always around football. It didn’t take long for it to grow on him. He started playing when he was in third grade. He played in a city league in Deming, New Mexico for the Steelers.
Montez wants to continue playing football in college, he would like to attend Arizona State, Texas Tech, or USC. He hopes to get a scholarship to keep playing. Although Montez is known by everyone for throwing long balls down the field, he started playing football by catching those passes.
While size and experience can be a factor in football this does not bother Montez. Standing 6 feet, 5 inches off the floor he uses his height to his advantage when throwing the ball and scrambling out of the pocket. As for his experience he plays to prove doubters wrong.
“I don’t think about it a lot, playing with them makes me play better,” Montez said, “I feel a grade older because I am always with seniors.”
This season he threw for 1568 yards, 25 TDs and 3 Ints. Montez suffered a season-ending injury in week 8 of the regular season against Ysleta High School. Montez fractured two of his vertebrae.
He should be able to play sports again in three to six weeks according to the doctor reports.
The injury affected the team because losing a player to an injury is always a setback.
“As a coach and a player I know that it made us sad that he couldn’t finish the season, but as a family we are happy because he will be able to play again,” varsity quarterbacks coach Alfred Montez said.
The offense had to adjust to a new quarterback during the bye week. The position went to sophomore Eric Lopez.
“Lopez is good, he’s real good for a sophomore, he is very poised,” Head Coach Jesse Perales said.
