Many of the girls on the softball team wear ribbons and ponytails, but the second they hit the field, it’s nothing but full-on girl power. Ruthless and determined. Here it all starts with a bat and ends with a home run.

The girls varsity softball team is made up of 13 girls including two seniors, four juniors, five sophomores, and two freshmen. Among the team, there are two girls that make the team extraordinary. Senior captain Cassandra Hernandez and sophomore captain Aileen Lynette Gomez.

Hernandez is the only senior captain on the team. She has been playing softball since she was eight years old. Never one to step down, Hernandez leads and encourages the team before and during each game.

“Being the only senior captain on the team feels absolutely amazing. We have surpassed many expectations on the varsity softball team. To me, softball is more than just a game. I also have to be constantly thinking on how to lead my team to success but in the end I know we will come out winning,” Hernandez said.

Aileen Lynette Gomez is one of the two sophomore captains on the team.

“It is awesome and scary. It’s awesome because I’m starting out early and I can learn what improvements we need to make as a team. It’s scary because there is always that fear of failing your team. One more thing, softball is not for softies,” Gomez said.

The girls varsity softball team is in the lead 8-7 in district, and 15-12 overall.

“We want to win our last game of the season and to do that you have to be the best you can be,” right field Jasmine Camacho said.
