Valentine’s Day through the years
Valentine’s Day has changed since it began in the 5th century. Some may find it less interesting when they don’t receive anything, others even after years of marriage find a way to demonstrate their love for each other.
“Valentine’s Day changed after 19 years of marriage, because our priorities changed, now we prefer to spend on something for the family than for us,” married couple Jose and Maribel Ruiz said.
Teenage girls still dream that someone special will send them an anonymous gift. Others who are single, don’t expect anything at all.
“My expectations for Valentine’s is nothing. I just want to concentrate on my career for now,” senior Jonathan Baca said.
Valentine’s Day seems to be a more romantic day for females.
“We care more about Feb. 14, because guys forget, more than girls, to give presents. We have always cared more for our sensitive heart and maybe that’s why we remember more,” senior Liliana Zuniga said.
Even after marriage some adults still dream of a special day with their loved one, even though the holiday is no longer the same.
“As an adult, I don’t expect much, but what I would love is (going to) dinner, or to go for a walk with my husband,” Maribel Ruiz said.
Teenage girls, like adults, expect that day to be special.
“For this Valentine’s Day I expect to spend the day with my boyfriend,” Zuniga said.
Sometimes the day is an opportunity for couples to spend the day together and remember the days when they were young, or still dating.
“Feb. 14 is an important day for us and an opportunity to show my love for my partner. It’s a tradition that we can use to enjoy the company of each other and we want to remember something special, no matter how small it is,” Jose Ruiz said.
Throughout the years things change. Either because there’s no time to celebrate, but for some Valentine’s Day is not the only day to be remembered.
Jose and Maribel Ruiz both agreed that Feb. 14 is an important day for them, but aside from that their anniversary is the day that they find more opportunity to spend time together.
Even after years of marriage or being in a relationship, Valentine’s Day is not about something big or extravagant, but more about the expression or words that come from one’s heart.
“Small details will always be those that touch the heart of a person. It’s important because that’s what makes one feel special,” Jose Ruiz said.
