1984, Big Brother is watching

If total government control and rebellious citizens are of interest then 1984 by George Orwell is the book to read.

The novel is set in post nuclear war America, where the government or “Big Brother,” has taken control of everything. After a long day at work a man heads home for some gin on the rocks, only to be greeted by a bottle of Victory Gin. Everything has been renamed.

And there are many laws set in place, but one law that is taken very seriously regards thought crime.

A thought crime is the crime of thinking negative thoughts about the government, hence the name thought crime, and one is constantly reminded that “Big Brother is watching.”

The story takes on third person limited from main character Winston Smith’s point of view. Throughout the story Smith’s thoughts pursue his determination to find out the truth about Big Brother.
