Spring sports wrap up
Cross country – Head coach Valerie Hairston. Both the varsity girls and boys teams did well this year. Diego Diaz and David Contreras led the boys team at districts and regionals. Miranda Leal and Leeza Guiterrez led the girls team. “On the girls side we have a young team with good runners coming back, on the boy though we have two of the top five runners graduating this year,” head coach Valerie Hairston said.
Golf – Head coach Oscar Cordova. This was the first year that the program had two full teams (boys and girls) make it to districts. Although they did well no golfers advanced to the regional round. For the girls Monica Guerro stood out, and on the boys side Evan Villalva led the team. The boys are looking strong for next year individually and as a team. “I see the girls being in the top teams next year, if not the season following that; it just depends how hard they work in the summer,” head coach Oscar Cordova said.
Track – Head coach Orlando Hairston. Boys – The boys had a great team this year led by Jason Morales, sprinter; Diego Diaz, 800m; David Contreras, 1600, 3200; and Josh Hernandez, shot put and discus. Girls – The girls are a younger team. Veronica Alvarez, sprinter; Michelle Hernandez, sprinter; Kayla Larry, shot put; girls 4×1 and 4×2 relay teams were all underclassmen as they qualified for regionals this year. “Next years team should be just as good if not better because a lot of the runners are returning, they just need to keep working hard,” head coach Orlando Hairston said.
Baseball – Overall record 16-15, district record 11-5, head coach Neil Sanchez. The team was led by seniors Esteban Martinez, Luis Vasquez, Jesus Guerro, and Frank Carrillo. The team placed second in district and advanced to the third game of bi-district play. “This year we had a very young team, our whole infield is coming back also with young pitchers,” head coach Neil Sanchez said. “We are looking at Freddy Murrillo and Dominic Ponce to step into leader positions next season.” Six seniors will graduate.
Softball – Overall record 8-9, district record 6-4, head coach Annette Gomez. “Freshman Athena Muniz and sophomore Deanna Alderette carried our team well this season,” head coach Annette Gomez said. With few seniors on the team there were many young players that constantly started. “Hopefully the experience they gained this year will encourage one of these young players to step up and take a leadership role on our team.” Gomez said. Three seniors graduate.
Soccer – Boys Overall record 16-6, district record 6-2, head coach Bruce Reichman. Experiencing a sudden loss in the second round of playoffs the team was led by seniors Luis Portillo, Jesus Payan, and Alfonso Vasquez. Losing 12 seniors will hurt, but we will be able to reload with returning players and a good Jv program coming up,” Head Coach Bruce Reichman said. Girls Overall record 15-7, district record 8-0, head coach Pedro Espinoza. This year the team succeeded very well in district going undefeated. “The girls were committed, we didn’t have problems with missing practice,” Head Coach Pedro Espinoza said. Next season we have a good group of girls coming up, it wont effect us too much because the work ethic is there,” Espinoza said. Ten seniors graduate.
