Ladies pin down the season, off to Regionals
Wrestling is a combat sport where two persons complete to win by maintaining certain positions using grappling moves to make the opponent’s body unable to move.
In the early 1940s men had to leave the country to fight in WW ll leaving women to take over wrestling. At first women’s wrestling was seen as a sideshow causing it to be banned from several states. Today women’s wrestling is an Olympic sport.
In the ‘70s, wrestling was in place at several schools at the U.S. Girls wrestling has been part of the school 13 years. Throughout the years the girls have moved on to become the successful team that is in place today. The girls left to regionals Feb.13.
“Athletic, talented, but they bring a sense of confidence, all confident,” head wrestling coach Carlos Armendariz said. Armendariz is working on making them a strong team mentally. He’s planning to go and win, and to have fun and enjoy.
The girls had to overcome some hurdles, facing injuries and losing members, but the team is not giving up. They are working to make themselves and their coaches proud. Coaches do all they can. It takes a lot of discipline, rules, and regulations to make the team a unit.
This year best girls in wrestling are Harley Ibarra, Leticia Herrera, Arlet Orozco, Celeste Hernandez, and Arlene Portillo. These girls have been giving their best throughout the season to be where they are now. This years team dual record is, 15-7.
Captain Harley Ibarra, is 13-1, and has been part of the team two years. She chose wrestling as a new challenge. Ibarra expects a lot from her team, but most of all she wants them to have a strong mental attitude.
“This year has been different due to the fact that we have a younger team,” Ibarra said.
