We got the spirit, you got to hear it, under the sea …
Seniors enjoyed their last, juniors are anxious to plan another, sophomores barely got the party started and freshmen were amazed by the Homecoming events.
Students wore pajamas, decorated doors and stuffed their faces in whip cream pies filled with Swedish Fish. Simply put Homecoming was a big success.
“The dance was probably the best considering it was the last hoo-rah for Homecoming,” Homecoming King Armando Maldonado said.
Maldonado and Felicia Alvarado were crowned Homecoming King and Queen during halftime at the Homecoming game Friday night. Gilbert Lopez and Vanessa Madrid were voted Prince and Princess. Alexander Lopez and Kimberly Embler were named varsity duke and duchess.
“I had a lot of fun, as my last Homecoming it was definitely cool to be such a big part of it. My favorite part was the parade because their were a lot of kids and I felt like I was a role model,” Lopez said.
The parade was filled with different club floats while the varsity football team rode a blue monster truck. The night ended with the Honored-ex pep rally and a 2nd annual firework extravaganza. Honored-Ex was Cristobal Rodriguez from Class of ‘96 and the Grand Marshal was CTE teacher Christopher Lopez.
“My favorite part was the extravaganza and the fireworks because it is a production now and the community is more involved now,” student council sponsor Cynthia Spitz said.
Throughout the week, the days were filled with lunch activities. Students from each class competed against each other. Each day added a little more excitement to the week. Plus an hour lunch with open campus let students enjoy their week even more.
“Eating school lunch gets boring. I was happy to go out with my friends and not worry about eating really fast. Whataburger beats school lunch any day,” junior Rebekha Posada said.
The prep-rally on Friday had students fired up. Each class roared as role call was called. Seniors took the victory because they cheered the loudest. In the pep-rally, clubs and organizations showcased their decorated shopping carts, the Art Club won the competition while MBA took second. The football team also grabbed the victory against Riverside 42-0 in the Homecoming game.
“It’s a necessary win because we have a lot of spectators. It’s Homecoming week, so the game is also part of the show. We put the school on our backs,” corner back Dakota Saavedra said.
The Homecoming dance capped Homecoming week. It was filled with dancing and celebrating. Seniors slow danced to the last song as the music faded and their last Homecoming came to a bittersweet end.
“It kind of sucked because it was my last Homecoming, but in a way it was cool because it was my last Homecoming, just one stop closer to graduation,” Maldonado said.
