Switched at Birth: The journey of a family’s daily drama

Feeling that she is different from her family down to the color of her eyes, hair, and skin, Bay Kennish (Vanessa Marano), feels that something’s not right in her family. One day she convinces her parents, John and Kathryn Kennish (D.W. Moffett and Lea Thompson), to take a DNA test to prove she is part of the Kennish family.

The results reveal that Bay is 99.9 percent not a Kennish. In shock the parents ask the doctor who their real daughter is.

After finding out Daphne Vasquez (Katie Leclerc), is their real daughter they decide to meet in the doctor’s office with her mother, Regina Vasquez (Constance Marie), only to find that Daphne is deaf.

Daphne and Bay were switched, the Vasquez family moves in with the Kennishes so they can get to know each other better. The story is built on family struggles.

Through the seasons Daphne and Bay change attitudes towards their family and friends. Kathryn is angry and depressed but decides to write a book to share the story of her life adding Regina’s point of view as well.

Switched at Birth was created by Lizzy Weiss, who is one of the exclusive producers partnering with Paul Stupin, John Ziffren, Becky Hartman, and Edwards. The show is rated 7.9/10 on IMDb and was ABC Family’s highest-rated series debut to date, winning an honorary Peabody Award in 2013. The series and actors, were nominated for several awards this year.

The show is a big thing for viewers, and a book was released during the first season. ABC Family promoted the series by launching an online game, “Switched at Birth: Hunt for the Code,” one week before the premiere.

Season 4 was released Jan. 6 and is running on ABC Family every Tuesday weeknight.
