District hopes to rebuild aging schools
A meeting was held on campus Jan. 13, concerning future plans for the district. The main topic was the structural problems found in many schools and how enrollment numbers are affecting the budget. Underused schools in bad condition are drawing people away.
“Campuses are in decay,” Principal Carmen Crosse said.
Superintendent Javier De La Torre plans to present a $380 to $423 million dollar plan to reconstruct YISD schools.
“For us the impact would be in our athletic facilities more 21st century buildings,” Crosse said.
Riverside High School and Riverside Middle School are not even halfway through their maximum capacity, however plans of combining the two have mixed opinions. Although no teaching positions will be eliminated, some positions like principals and school nurses are at risk.
“There are a lot of questions to be answered, we need to make sure the community gets the info and updates,” Crosse said.
Nearby schools such as Valley View and Camino Real Middle Schools are among these that are candidates for changes.
“I hope they find a way to fix them without tearing them down,” junior Beatriz Hernandez said.
The district plans to consolidate seven elementary schools and four middle schools.
Meetings are being held at the district high schools from Jan. 12 to Feb. 5. The bond will go up for voting soon.
“If it is approved it will most likely take place in late 2016 or 2017,” Crosse said.
