TeenNick awards HALO honorees
The TeenNick Helping And Leading Others (HALO) awards has been shown every December since it was first aired on Dec. 11, 2009 to honor four ordinary teens who have shown outstanding leadership and community service.
With chairman Nick Cannon, the show was a hit receiving 3 million views when it aired Nov. 30.
Unlike the Grammies or Oscars where celebrities receive awards, HALO award winners received awards from celebrities.
Lulu Cerone, 15, started a donation called Lemonade Warriors to help benefit people hurt by the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Her organization raised and donated over $80,000.
Alanna Wall, 15, whose mom is a nurse at a local hospital noticed that many of the girls there didn’t look happy. Wall started a group called, Polished Girls, they have gone to hospitals in over 27 states and made hospitalized girls nails sparkle.
Cassandra Lin, 17, took TGIF to a whole new level, Turn Grease Into Fuel. Lin goes to restaurants and asks for the used grease. She takes it to a lab where it is transferred into bio heat. She has donated 25 thousand gallons of bio heat to warm families that are in need.
Yash Gupta, 17, saw the need to help those who have trouble seeing. Sight Learning, donates glasses to kids who have trouble seeing. They have donated to Mexico, Haiti, India, and Indonesia.
Nicholas Lowinger, 16, volunteered at a homeless shelter and noticed that kids shoes were in bad condition. He started, Gotta Have Soul, which donates new shoes to kids in homeless shelters. The program donated over 20,000 pairs of shoes to kids over 35 states.
