Campus gets Fashion Design class approval
Nutrition Wellness teacher Cynthia Delgado took up a petition through DVHSfashion.weebly.com to add a fashion design class. She needed to get 100 students to sign up for the class in order to make it an elective. However, when she got 73 students the class was approved by Principal Carmen Crosse and it was added to the class list for pre-registration.
Student Diana Delgadillo is interested in taking this class next year.
“(The) class (will) be a fun and good learning experience,” Delgadillo said.
The idea of creating this class came to Delgado when she became aware that other high schools had the class. She always had an interest in it.Materials and machines for the class include sewing machines, ironing boards, digital cameras, and portable dress forms.
Since Delgado teaches the Nutrition Wellness class, it means fewer of those classes will be scheduled in order to accommodate the Fashion Design class. Some of the projects include Fashion shows, competitions through Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and Technology Student Association (TSA).
“It (gives) a wider range for kids (in) the Fashion Industry, (and is) a great opportunity for (the) kids career,” counselor Jazmine Villa said. Delgado already has goals for her students.
“(To) help students learn technical knowledge of textiles, design, construction and develop employable characteristics (and) grow the program so we can include Fashion Design II and a practicum (field based training), and provide scholarships for students,” Delgado said.
