Prom candidates campaign

There are only two girls and three boys running for Prom King and Queen. Iliana Lopez, Lori Gutierrez, Sebastian Frausto, Jose Sosa, and Keith Barron. For the first time, to qualify as a candidate students had to have less than seven unexcused absences, and have approval from teachers that they are passing.

Compared to last year, candidates haven’t given away much to try to get votes. Usually there are giant posters hanging in the commons, and a bunch of products that candidates give away. Last school year candidates also performed during lunch before students voted. They performed to songs of their choice and had to come up with a dance routine to pick up themselves away.

Running for prom can sometimes be caused by a bet.

“Honestly it was a bet against my friend, because I said I wasn’t popular and he thinks I am,” senior Lori Gutierrez said.

Candidates have different reasons for running.

“Just to do it, I want to look back at my senior year and say I remembered when I ran for Prom King,” senior Jose Sosa said.
“I’m excited because running against a nice person really sparked up the competition,” senior Iliana Lopez said.

The Prom King and Queen will be announced at the Tuscany Ballroom May 17 at 8 p.m.
