Teacher of the Year

Freshman English teacher Erika Lazo was named Teacher of the Year. She has taught English 2 and English 1 and pre AP over the last four years.

“The students have a big heart and the teachers are very supportive, and we all work together to make students succeed,” Lazo said.

Teacher of the Year is nominated by a teacher in the department, then the nomination must be seconded. Candidates are selected by faculty vote.

“Ms. Lazo’s class was always my favorite. She never had a frown on her face. She always excepted the best out of us and never took any less,” senior Jislem Avila said.

Lazo’s selection as teacher of the year came as a surprise to her.

“I don’t think I deserve this over anyone. It was a surprise, I had no idea I had been nominated. I feel very humbled. The teachers are always helping each other, I feel like it’s a team effort and we should all be awarded” Lazo said.

Some of Lazo’s goals are to travel around the world, get her masters and have more community service projects with SLC.

“My goal for every year is to make sure that my students class as long life learners,” Lazo said.
