Lanyards, the new accessory

From a standard identification holder to a customized accessory, lanyards have become a must have. A requirement item turns out to be the new attention getter because of the many designs available.

Lanyards have been used since the early 15th century. The term lanyard comes from a French word “laniére” meaning to strap. This item is used in schools, at work and in stores for many reasons.

“Lanyards are useful in keeping keys with you,” sophomore Victor Seanez said. “They are easy to handle.”

In school, they are practical ID holders.

“In terms of safety, lanyards are useful as an ID holder,” SLC coordinator Robert Armendariz said. “However they aren’t necessarily better than clips, lanyards have more appeal for students because it is something they can personalize.”

Although lanyards are required, not many like the idea of wearing a strap around their necks.

“Lanyards can get stuck anywhere,” sophomore Brianna Gomez said. “Sometimes it is hard to put on and take it off if you have a lot of hair.”

These accessories come in a variety of colors and designs. Many choose lanyards to show off their favorite football team, cartoon, band or crazy pattern.

“I like the color in my lanyard,” sophomore Rene Lucero said. “The design is simple but pretty cool.” Lucero uses a tie-dyed, spiral pattern lanyard

Students turn plain, simple straps into a more fun and creative look using pins and hang keychain accessories.
