It is midseason for the track team, but they are taking a different approach. The team has some new faces and as always, seniors will be graduating forcing the team to make adjustments.

“I thought about what we can do to get better and I remembered that we don’t practice every day,” track coach Ramon Benavidez said. “I made sure that was changed quickly.”

Daily practices help athletes improve.

“The competition is fierce every year — no question — and trying to beat your previous record helps you strive to do better,” discus thrower Sabreena Gutierrez said.

Track is a competitive sport that requires a lot of ambition and determination.

“I’m always finding ways to motivate myself to work harder, whether it’s trying to break my records from last year or even improving the small stuff,” 100 meter runner Andrew Jimenez said.

Seniors are conscious of their responsibility to be leaders.

“Honestly, it’s cool being a role model to the younger members but I also remind myself to be a role model in a positive way,” sprinter George Morales said. “(For example,) I don’t give attitude to coaches or give up easily.”

Senior leaders contribute and help the team.

“Whenever we need to get advice from a team member we always go ask a senior,” sprinter Isaiah Guevara said.

Even though seniors are a vital part of the team, they will leave soon.

“I’ve been extra motivated this year especially knowing it’s my last year with the other members,” senior George Morales said.

Coach Benavidez is optimistic that track members will do their best and looks forward to their season.

“Effort is all I ask for from my members and, of course, for them to never slack it — the rest will all play out,” Benavidez said.
