From perfecting a story to mastering formulas in mathematics, preparing for University Interscholastic League (UIL) academic competitions takes a lot of time. The school is participating in 22 different categories including Literary Criticism, Cross Examination, mathematics and four journalism events. Each category prepares differently.  

UIL academic competition starts in district March 23-24, followed by regionals and state competition held in Austin, Tx.

Teams practice at different times.

“We start to practice in the beginning of the year,” Literary Criticism sponsor Margarita Cabral Castro said. “It takes about seven months to prepare.”

UIL competition involves teams.

“We (choose) our team (members) with good grades and teacher recommendations,” Cabral said.

Preparation for UIL can take place anywhere.

“They practice in class on their own, during study skills,” Cabral said. “Other than preparing at school we like to go to Starbucks.

UIL can have an impact on school and students.

“UIL gives students who are strong in academics a chance to compete,” assistant principal Laura Ponce said.

Expectations for UIL are usually the to win first place.

“I expect the competitors to do do their best,” Ponce said.
