The Conquerettes pull off every dance they attempt.

From a kick routine to jump splits, the Conquerettes put in time and sweat. In practice they work to make every dance run smoothly. The dancers start early at 6:30 a.m. if they are in need of extra practice and stay until 6:30 p.m. to practice and perfect.

“I love to dance, I love the connection that dancers have with each other in general and I wanted to experience doing what I love with people that I love,” Conquerette Danae Vazquez said.

Being a part of this team may sound fun, but it’s not all fun and games when it comes to learning a new dance and paying for uniforms and costumes. It can cost each member up to $750 to be part of the team.

Team coach Melissa Dominguez and the captains design the outfits. After performances, costumes are returned or put away for the dance classes to use. Sometimes dancers keep them. The costumes used in a 2016 competition were hand made by the team and later on kept by the girls.

“The (number of) outfits depends on what (the team) is doing. Sometimes during football season it can be five to 10 outfits, but not every dance requires a new outfit. I and the captains choose the outfits. Sometimes the outfits are theirs or the schools, depending on the dance,” coach Dominguez said.

To help the program run smoothly captains must be ready to accept many responsibilities.

“To be a captain they must be hardworking, have good integrity, be a good teacher and put the team first,” coach Dominguez said.

As captain one must be able to motivate the team as well as take on more responsibility for the team.

“To be a part of the team you must have dedication and passion for dance and the team,” captain Gabriala Chairez said.
