A New year offers new chances and changes. Librarian Elena Ortega sets a good example by inspiring students to read with new library sponsored activities.

“The activities I have planned for January are Loteria for books, Movie Night, Popsicle in the Plaza, Wednesday Book Talks and Muffin with a Book. All these events are new to the library except for the Movie Night,” librarian Ortega said.

Ortega is already preparing more for the next month.

“I’m planning the dates of the events, I purchase items that will be needed for that specific day, and I also have to discuss the dates with custodians for table setups and such,” Ortega said.

All of Ortega’s efforts are yielding results.

“Students seem to be very inspired and all this came to be successful because students are reading way more,” Ortega said.

Not only is Ortega doing things for the library but also students are supporting these events.

“It’s nice to be involved because I get to meet new people while learning new things and I think the activities help the students get motivated to read more,” sophomore Alejandra Mendoza said.

Students also try to find a way to capture non reader’s attention.

“I think the best way to get students to read is for us readers to inspire students about books and to go to any of these activities,” Mendoza said. “They should add more events that all students like so there could be more students in the library,” Library courtesy Adrienna Chapparro said.
