Volleyball is big on campus. Coaches improve plays and to spice things up the volleyball players’ confidence starts to build.

“Varsity is looking good, we are coming around. We are not solid yet, we still have to work on the small things, the consistency of passing the ball and consistency of communication,” varsity volleyball coach Jesse Lugo said.

Coach Lugo expects his Lady Conquistadors to make the campus look good as always. The team 13-12 overall, 3-5 in district competition.

“Varsity hasn’t reached its expectations. Not until they go to play at district. We haven’t finished the season, we have to win district. Our first game is Sept. 11, against Parkland so my expectation is to be ready for district,”Lugo said.

The Lady Conquistadors are stepping ahead of the game and making their way into being the best they can be.

“We have a good team and we can make it to districts, we can even go off to playoffs,” volleyball co-captain Veronica Alvarez said.

Many of the Ladies on the team left the game either to focus on school or because they found a new interest in something else, but that didn’t stop several Big Bad Blue Ladies from coming back.

“Seven players returned, five seniors and two juniors,” coach Lugo said.

Although many of the varsity players are injured this has not stopped the Ladies from reaching their goal.

“It’s not that we had to make changes, we had to make adjustments. We lost senior Deanne Alderette due to her knee surgery. In order for us to make up her loss we had to move up two girls from the Jv team. Like I said we need to be working on the consistency of communication and consistency of passing the ball,” Lugo said.

Many of the Jv and freshmen players are reaching for a spot in varsity with the coaches help they are determined to make the campus look its best.

“The freshmen team is looking pretty good with coach Padilla, he is the freshmen coach. He is working with them really well, I see a lot of potential. Jv is working good as well with coach Porras, he is having them move around much better. We are going to be good also next year,” coach Lugo said.

Injuries are a big factor to every team on campus especially during the season. Coaches lose players and gain players causing them to change strategies during   their games.

“We didn’t have that many changes considering our injuries. There wasn’t that much improvement that we really needed,” Alvarez said.

Many have different opinions about the Jv and freshmen team, especially varsity because they like setting good examples.

“Jv have a lot to work on but once they start getting what they need to do and get done they’ll be okay. Freshmen are coming along pretty fast because they already know what they wanna do,” Alvarez said.

The Lady Conquistadors are looking good and making a name for themselves and the campus.

“Our team goals are to win, play together and stay discipline,” varsity volleyball captain Kayla Dubrule said.
