Varsity gets ready to take on Canutillo

The first thing the opponents may see when walking into the main gym is the bigger-than-life size posters of the varsity volleyball girls. The posters represent the Ladies hard work, and victories. They also probably work to intimidate the opponents.
By now varsity volleyball team has wrapped up the season. The Ladies are 8-8 in district and 16-16 overall. Even though the Ladies lost a few games, the team worked hard to stay together.
The Ladies did not go to playoffs, failing success against Canutillo High School, Oct. 29, 3 sets to 0.
They took the win Oct. 22, against Ysleta High School with a final set of 3-0. As hard as they work the Ladies don’t always acquire success. They racked up a loss against Eastlake High School, final set 3-0, Oct. 18.
“I take games the most serious. I show my team everything is possible,” captain Kimberly Martinez said.
Even after a tough loss Oct. 15, against Hanks High School, 3 sets to 1, the Ladies continued to work hard.
“I consider my varsity captain a good one, she never gives up and pushes a lot to win,” freshman captain Toni Leyva said.
The Ladies did beat Parkland High School with a final set 3-0, Oct. 3.
“My expectation as a captain is to finish the season in a strong and winning note,” Martinez said.
“We practice four times a week Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday in the main gym to get what we acquire,” varsity coach Jesse Lugo said.
Coach Lugo said the team spends about $5,000 on equipment and new uniforms, fundraising money goes toward those expenses.
Tryouts are held early in April. The coach chooses 12 to 14 girls for varsity, 15 girls for Jv, and 15 girls for the freshman team. He chooses two to three members to be varsity captains.
The varsity volleyball team started the season with their first game against Bel Air High School, August 13, winning 3 sets to 1. They started their first practice August 5, at 6 a.m.
“I would describe my girls academically strong, competitive, and a great group of kids. I’m very proud of them,” Lugo said.
